Beyond The Classroom

Student Life MACS Overview

For both the lower and upper school, experiential learning is thoughtfully and meticulously planned to align seamlessly with classroom instruction, creating transformative “aha” moments that deepen scholars’ understanding and engagement. This approach allows scholars to experience world-class, high-caliber opportunities that directly connect to their curriculum, enriching their academic journey with hands-on, real-world applications.

For instance, upper-grade scholars studying the “Breaking Barriers” module in humanities will have the opportunity to visit the Jackie Robinson Museum, allowing them to explore historical themes of perseverance and social change through an immersive, tangible experience. Meanwhile, lower-grade scholars exploring the five senses in their curriculum will visit Taste Buds Kitchen, where they will engage in cooking activities that activate all five senses—seeing, smelling, touching, tasting, and hearing. This not only reinforces their classroom learning but also fosters a deeper, more personal connection to the material through practical application.

By integrating these thoughtfully curated experiences, the program bridges the gap between academic theory and practical exploration, providing scholars with a robust, enriched learning environment that extends beyond the traditional classroom setting.

A Note from the Director

Ms. Reid is an education professional with over 15 years of experience. She holds an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education and a B.S. in Psychology from The City College of New York in Harlem. Throughout her career, primarily in leadership roles including as a Dean of Students, she has developed a strong passion for creating enriching, out-of-classroom experiences for scholars.
Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, where safe and engaging programs were often limited, Ms. Reid quickly recognized the importance of providing such opportunities. This realization has shaped her leadership journey and solidified her commitment to enhancing student life, with the goal of making school a place that scholars genuinely love and look forward to each day. She is continually inspired by the prospect of offering scholars unique, exclusive, and imaginative experiences that go beyond the ordinary, driving her dedication to designing impactful after-school programs, summer academies, field trips, and other initiatives that spark students’ passion and creativity.
